Create your USI

A USI is your free lifelong education number. You only need to create it once.

Why you need a USI

You need a USI if you are:

  • studying nationally recognised vocational education and training (VET)
  • seeking a VET student loan
  • a higher education student seeking Commonwealth financial assistance e.g. HELP loan  or enrolling in a Commonwealth Supported Place
  • a higher education student graduating.

Create your USI now

Use one form of verifiable ID or your Digital ID to create your USI.

Creating a USI

There is no minimum age for a USI but you do need verifiable identification (ID) to create a USI.

Make sure your name appears the same on your USI account, Tax File Number (TFN) and enrolment records to avoid enrolment issues or graduating without delay.

If you are at university, make sure your enrolment records reflects your legal name on your verifiable ID.

We recommend that you use the same identification document to create your USI, your TFN and myGov account.

  1. Access our Student Portal.
  2. Select ‘Create USI’.
  3. Enter your personal details using one form of ID.
  4. Enter your contact details (use a personal email address  and avoid using a school, training, work or shared email address).
  5. Secure your account with multi-factor authentication (MFA).
  6. Your USI account is now activated.
